Theophany

Theophany is a combination of 2 Greek words: Theos (God) + phanios (To bring to light, make appear, to come to light). Invisible God revealing Himself to human beings.

5 ways through which God is revealed in OT

  • Direct message/Direct Revelation – Exodus 19:9-25
  • Message through Dreams Gen 20: 3-7, 15: 1-21
  • Through Vision Isaiah 6:1
  • Through Angels Gen 16:7-13
  • Angels coming in dreams Gen 31:11-13

Different types of Theophany

  • The Face of the Lord Genesis 32:30, Numbers 6:24-26,27 (Pani’m) (God’s Presence) 
  • The Voice of God 1 Kings 19:12 – Elijah, Deut 5:22-24
  • The Word of God (Hebrew meaning: Dabhar) (Is 2:1, Jeremiah 1:2) – Ps 107:20 , 147:17
  • The Glory of God (Hebrew meaning: Khabod) – The weight of God’s glory. Doxa (Greek) Doxology Exodus 29:42, 43, Ezekiel 43:2. 
  • God’s Angel (Hebrew meaning – Malakh) (Gen 16:7, Exodus 15, 16, Gen 18:1
  • The Spirit of God (Hebrew meaning Ruah) Genesis 1:1 Exodus 3:13, 1 Samuel 17:45, Deut: 28:58
